This past Friday marked a historic day in the Living Bricks Village. Without a doubt, any day where a disadvantaged person becomes a person with economic capacity overnight will always be a monumental day in that person's life and in the lives of their family.

On this day, Pastor Deo Gashagaza, (Prison Fellowship Rwanda Executive Director), Andrea McDaniel from the As We Forgive Rwanda Initiative, new friend and partner Diana Wiley (learn about her work with True Vineyard), and myself (Rachel Weber, LBC Rwanda-based Comm. Coordinator) made the trek out to the Bugesera District to visit with the community members of the Living Bricks Village and those waiting to become members through home ownership in the Living Bricks Village.

Before arrival at the Living Bricks Village, we were told that it would be any day that the new homeowners would move in to their homes. But we were not aware that the exact day we arrived for a visit would be a move-in day for one family, and second day of life in a new home for another family.
Proudly standing by their homes waiting to welcome the visitors were Elias Nkubiri and his family and Agnes Mugakatore and her children.

I met Elias my very first week in Rwanda this past September. Each time I met him on my visits, he would tell me about his family and his desire to care for them. Unfortunately, he was crippled by his returned refugee status in his own country. When he returned to Rwanda in 1994 he found his family property was gone, and there were limited opportunities for growth and prosperity for his family.

Praises were streaming from Elias' lips about the joy and freedom that accompany home ownership in Rwanda. The family's relief was tangible as they invited us in for a tour of their new home.

Agnes has been without a husband for the past fifteen years. After the genocide, her husband was imprisoned for life for genocide crime. She was left with three children, no home, and no source of income. Still, the heaviest burden weighing on her is the shame of her past, and her familial association with the killers. Ever since her husband's imprisonment, she has been living transitionally with those who offer to house her and her children.

This past Friday was Agnes' second day in her first home in sixteen years. A quiet woman, tears were flowing down her face when we approached her doorway, and she did away with her typically soft tone of voice. Waving her arms in the air and thanking God and Pastor Deo, exuberant words of joy and thankfulness spilled out of her mouth. Because of Living Bricks, she can now rest in the knowledge that her children can sleep safely at night.

While a home does not erase the pain of a husband sentenced to life in prison or the scars of her unwanted association with a group known to kill, the security of a home will offer her safety, comfort, and a chance for economic mobility as she continues her personal journey to promote peace and unity in her village.

After the Living Bricks Village is complete, Prison Fellowship Rwanda will work with families to establish income generating activities such as livestock sharing projects or agricultural cooperatives in the village. Now that the recipients have stability in the home, they have greater capacity for economic development and improved livelihood.

Living Bricks is renewing lives, rebuilding communities, and restoring homes. Will you give a brick?

- Rachel Weber, Communications Coordinator for the Living Bricks Campaign

Basically, just fixing broken things.

Jesus pretty much has a Master’s degree in fixing broken things, made abundantly clear in those three decades he walked among us. Healing the sick, the blind, the mute, the lame. Casting out demons. Even raising the dead.

He also taught us how to live, forgive, confess, repent, and pray—much of which is summed up in The Lord’s Prayer. Most of us can recite it by memory, but when we do so in a new environment, we inevitably reach that line where we’re not sure what to say: “And forgive us our . . .”

Our what?

Trespasses? Sins? Debts? When it comes right down to it, it doesn’t really matter which of the three options we choose.

Let’s look at each, starting with that last option. And let’s start with my credit card debt. I’d love pick up the phone, call the bank, and say, “Hey, remember what Jesus said about forgiving our debts? I’ll forgive yours if you’ll forgive mine!” I don’t think that request would go very far.

But is that what Jesus means by our “debts”? That’s the way it’s literally translated Matthew; Luke’s version is typically translated “sins” or “trespasses.” In Aramaic, the word for debt can also mean sin, and in both cases, Jesus clearly means that we should forgive another’s sins in the same way we’d forgive another’s debt. Theologically and practically, it’s the same type of “transaction.” One person owes another – whether it’s money (a fiscal debt) or restitution (righting a wrong).

Scripture also says that we essentially owe one another forgiveness. Matthew’s version of The Lord’s Prayer includes this little PS that we don’t say aloud: “If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins” (Matthew 6:14-15).

I don’t like that part very much. Seems too hard, doesn’t it? We’re only human; how can we be expected to forgive as God forgives? He’s perfect; we’re not. It’s part of his nature, not ours. It certainly doesn’t feel like it’s part of mine.

And yet there it is, in black-and-white: A command. Not a negotiation. Not a suggestion.

Consequently, I try to live it as best as I can, forgiving those who’ve “trespassed against me.” Maybe I snap back first, or hold a grudge, or give them the temporary cold shoulder. But eventually, sometimes more quickly than others, I usually get around to forgiveness.

But some wounds go so deep that forgiveness seems impossible. It’s much easier to hold on to anger/hatred/hurt than it is to forgive. We deserve to feel this way! Aren’t some transgressions simply unforgivable from our human perspective?

In my mind, I know it’s possible to forgive even the worst of sins, but my heart and my gut didn’t always believe it. But now that I’ve seen such “impossible forgiveness,” I am beginning to understand that it can be done.

When I visited Rwanda in early 2009, I met a few people who have demonstrated what such forgiveness looks like – as the givers of such incredible mercy, and as recipients. It’s an astonishing, beautiful, life-changing thing to see.

I met people who lost loved ones – spouses, parents, children – in the 1994 genocide, people who had seen their kin hacked to death, right before their eyes. People who had been maimed and raped and tortured. People who had lost everything.

And somehow, many of these people – victims of heinous crimes – had forgiven the killers. Not just in the privacy of their hearts or homes, but face-to-face. And many of the killers, crippled by remorse for their sins, had not only graciously accepted forgiveness, but were now providing restitution to their victims.

I’ll never forget meeting Marc Sahabo, who had killed 15 people in the genocide – including many members of Felicita Mukabakunda’s family. Felicita and Marc had been neighbors and friends before the genocide, before ethnic tensions rose to the point where all hell broke loose, Hutu killing Tutsi, neighbor killing neighbor, brother killing brother.

“I had so much hatred,” Felicita told me. “I wanted Marc to die a slow, painful death. I would have killed him if I could.” But Marc, fearing for his life, had fled Rwanda. When he later returned, he was arrested and spent seven years in prison before his 2003 release.

A few years later, a reconciliation ministry called Rwanda Partners encouraged Marc and Felicita to reconcile – he to confess his sins, and she to forgive. Marc, saddled by guilt, was anxious to take the step, but Felicita, clinging to hate and paralyzed by fear, wasn’t so ready. But through patient counseling, reading God’s Word, and Spirit-led conviction, she eventually agreed.

Marc and Felicita sat side-by-side as they told me the story. Then Marc got out of his chair, demonstrating how he got down on his knees before Felicita, folded his hands, confessed his crimes, and begged for mercy. She put her hand on his shoulder, looked him in the eyes, and said simply and quietly, “I forgive you.”

Marc says that at that moment, he felt like he “just came out of a shower, a clean man, except it was like a holy shower, because I felt clean on the inside.” Felicita’s heavy burden was lifted, and the migraine headaches and nightmares she had suffered for ten years immediately disappeared.

Today, Marc and Felicita are best friends. When I visited, they shared a beer and many laughs. Their children play together, and their families regularly share meals. The two of them ride a bike from village to village, telling their story.

“I’m not scared of him anymore,” says Felicita. “Without Jesus, I’d go back to hating Marc. But because of Jesus, I have forgiven Marc, and I love him now.”

It’s true, then. Such forgiveness is possible. It’s not just theoretical theology. It actually can happen.

Since hearing their story, I’ve been more apt to forgive, to grant more grace, to extend the mercy that I, a sinner myself, so do not deserve. But I forgive because I am forgiven.

I don’t expect my creditors to feel the same way. But being in debt also helps me to understand the gravity of my own debt to God – for his grace – and to others.

Mark Moring is senior associate editor of Christianity Today, where he covers social justice, pop culture, and other issues. Thank you to all our supporters that continue to give hope for Rwandans through home ownership. The heartbreaking stories of Elias, Jean Damascene, and Agnes are about to be redeemed through these life-altering gifts.

For Agnes Mukagatore, she has been without a husband for the past fifteen years. After the genocide, her husband was imprisoned for genocide crimes and she was left with three children, no home, and no source of income. Still, the heaviest burden weighing on her is the shame of her past, and her familial association with killers. Ever since her husband’s imprisonment, she has been living transitionally with those who offered to house her and her three children.

Jean Damascene Karangwa lost twenty of his immediate family members to the machete during the genocide, not including his large extended family, most of who were also slaughtered in 1994. He was merely 15 years old when the genocide broke out and he managed to escape to Burundi until the terror subsided. When he returned to Rwanda, he was without home, family, or means for income or education. He has been without his own home for fifteen years.

Finally, meet Elias Nkubiri. Elias was born in Rwanda in 1959. He was exiled to Burundi when he was young to escape ethnic conflict. As a refugee in Burundi, his life was extremely difficult. He married in Burundi, and in 1995 after the genocide he returned with his wife and four children to seek peace and prosperity. He was unable to discover where his deceased parents owned property and his family was left without stable housing. His children are in primary school and they are struggling to find means to survive. The greatest difficulty for his family is lack of a stable home.

But this past December, their lives changed completely. Pastor Deo of Prison Fellowship Rwanda and Pastor Gahigi, featured in the film As We Forgive, visited the people in this small village just outside of the thriving capital, Kigali, to tell them that they were all going to be new homeowners through the Living Bricks Campaign.

Agnes shares," to me, Living Bricks is special because I see these reconciliation efforts reaching out to me -- there is no segregation [to serve only genocide survivors]. I know I have a husband in prison and I'm treated like a criminal in many regions, but these pastors are treating me well, and are even giving me a home. I'm welcomed in this community." Agnes’ words could not have been spoken more true. Here she is, affiliated with the tribe that slaughtered over a million Tutsis and moderate Hutus, sharing in this joy with two genocide survivors at her side.

Please continue to give bricks that return lives to the Rwandans.

It was Mattias, a repentent genocide perpetrator who killed countless people in the 1994 genocide. His story of transformation is told in Catherine Larson's book As We Forgive. Mattias was also counseled and led to repentence by Pastor Gahigi, featured in the AWF film.

Mattias came to our office so we could transport him to an African Leadership Conference in Kigali in order to share his powerful testimony to promote nationwide unity. I piled into our car with Mattias and other PFR staff to go to the conference and I was squeezed in next to Mattias. I noticed immediately his humble, quiet, and kind disposition. I could hardly believe this is a man who murdered numerous people 15 years ago.

We pulled off on a side road to pick up someone else who was to attend to this conference. I was stretching my legs while waiting when a woman on the back of a motorcycle taxi pulled up. She took off her helmet and immediately I recognized her... it was Rosaria, one of the main characters from the film As We Forgive! This was our first meeting and I rushed over to meet her and speak to her with my rudimentary Kinyarwanda. We soon became fast friends, and I was in awe of the love exuding from her touch, smile, and laughter. Mattias came over to greet her with a handshake, but she quickly pulled him in with a loving embrace. Here was a woman, who barely survived being hacked with machetes during the genocide, sharing a genuine friendship with a perpetrator. I was overwhelmed to see these two banter back and forth as old friends, laughing and holding hands.

During my three months in Rwanda, I have been confronted with skepticism in regards to genuine reconciliation in this country. It is not an easy process, and 15 years after the genocide wounds are still fresh and reconciliation dialogue must continue. But yesterday I saw proof through a loving friendship between a genocide survivor and a perpetrator that reconciliation is possible. The Living Bricks Campaign is slowly but surely shaking off the skepticism in Rwanda through practical reconciliation efforts that change lives.

- Rachel

p.s. Check out the unbelievable stories of Mattias and Rosaria on the Forgiveness Wall!

Muraho from Rwanda! My name is Rachel Weber, a recent addition to the Living Bricks team. I will be working as the Communications Coordinator from Rwanda through June 2010. I have the unique opportunity to track stories of radical reconciliation, repentance, and forgiveness throughout Rwanda and share them with our faithful supporters in the U.S. I will also be offering organizational support and communications assistance to the As We Forgive: Rwanda Initiative, which uses the film As We Forgive as an educational tool to create public dialogue about the process of reconciliation, repentance, and forgiveness throughout Rwanda.

Within my first week in Rwanda, I ventured out to the Mayange sector in the Bugesera district to visit the inhabitants of the freshly constructed Living Bricks homes and those waiting to receive homes. Weaving the roads on a bus jammed with people beyond its seating capacity, I was struck with the beauty of the countryside. It seemed impossible that 15 years ago this country, which seems so peaceful on the exterior, was ravaged by one of the most brutal mass killing atrocities the world has seen.

When I arrived, the secretary of the Mayange Sector, Francis, picked me up and promptly drove me to a dusty road where I met five individuals waiting for their own Living Bricks home to be built. Most of the individuals I spoke to lived as refugees growing up and returned to Rwanda after the genocide to seek peace and prosperity, only to join the large population of displaced. The needs of these individuals are extraordinary. While peace is currently mainatined throughout Rwanda, the long-term impact from the genocide has a direct correlation with the amount of poverty in this country, especially the lack of home ownership. The five people I met in Mayange were only a small sample of people from this sector in dire need of housing.

Still, I managed to find hope amidst the plight of the people of Mayange. The name of our project, "Living Bricks," was literally brought to life when I was able to meet the recent recipients of Living Bricks homes, Veronica and Gemima. Owning a home provides a stable foundation that allows the inhabitants to pursue more opportunities to develop their livelihood. There is hope in homes, and even more so in homes that are built with the hands and hearts of those seeking to build a unified country.

- Rachel Weber, Living Bricks Communications Coordinator
